Tough Sh*T: A Short Review

Tough Sh*T: A Short Review

A couple of months ago I picked up Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat Lazy Slob Who Did Good. It took me two days to read it cover to cover. A month later, I read it again. The only other book that I’ve read cover to cover twice was the Steve Jobs biography, and that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

First and foremost, this book is written exactly like his movies. It reads as a poetic composition of some of the best stories and sagas you will ever read. It also holds absolutely nothing back. Whether it’s him mocking himself, talking about sex with his wife, or how he got kicked off a plane for being fat, he writes in poetic candids.

The most interesting part of the book was the inside look on what it took for him to get to where he is today. It was the stories about trying to get Miramax to distribute Clerks, trying to get Harvey Weinstein to produce his movies, and working on the Clerks 2 sequel that will draw you in as an outsider, but it will be the stories about how me met his wife, having a child, and his experiences with Quentin Tarentino that will keep you reading.

This book does not read as a life advice book, but more as a "Here's the way I did it and it worked. Maybe it'll work for you." It is also not safe for kids. He talks about staring at his wife's ass and ejaculating on her leg because she had to leave for an event so they couldn't have sex. Like I said, he holds nothing back and is just as vulgar and brilliant in the book as he is in his movies.

As I said, this is a short review. A very short review. Pick up the book. Read it. Read it again. Now, as a teaser, here is an excerpt from the first chapter :

“Though if you could ask my father, he’d likely admit that while having his balls in print is flattering, having his balls in my mother’s mouth was way better.”

He also dedicates the book to his wife. And his wife’s asshole. It is pure Kevin Smith

Nerd Block October 2014

This month’s Nerd Block has been by far the best one that I’ve had. Nerd Block is a monthly subscription box service similar to Loot Crate and Booty Bin. Nerd Block offers several options at different prices: Classic (your everyday nerd assortments), Arcade (video game themed), Horror (horror themed, duh), and Junior (Boys or Girls, the kids stuff). They range from $13.99-$19.99 per month plus shipping and handling, they come from Canada so it’s another $6-$10 for shipping.

Now to the unboxing.

This month was hand picked by none other than Kevin Smith! Yes, you heard that right Lunchbox, the Kevin Smith! So, you can assume that it will be awesome and have Kevin Smith treasures inside.

1. Legend of Zelda dangler from TOMY
2. Marvel vs. DC button set (Marvel is the best, duh)
3. Arkham Asylam Sticky Note book (Assorted colors and sizes)
4. Jay and Silent Bob stickers (different themes)
5. Agent Coulson’s Captain America Trading Cards Replica Set from EFX Collectibles

6. Previews Exclusive Deadpool POP figure from FUNKO

7.Jay and Silent Bob dressed as Batman and Robin T-Shirt

As you can see this month was truly amazing. Next month is going to be picked by cult film legend Bruce Campbell and 1 out of every block will feature a Bruce Campbell autograph. It will also feature an exclusive Boba Fett item which I am truly excited for if you can’t tell. Get your subscription today so you don’t miss out on these great items!

I should be getting my Arcade Block soon so look forward to that review in the coming weeks.

Until next time, May the Force Be With You!

Johnny Depp? Kevin Smith? Their Daughters? Yoga Hosers? You Bet!

Coming on the heals of the release of the Tusk trailer, it was announced that Tusk would be the beginning of a Canadian folklore trilogy. All films would be written and directed by Kevin Smith. All films will be awesome.

This week new announcements have started to come out regarding the second film, Yoga Hosers. First, we found out that Kevin Smith’s daughter, Harley, would be in the film. Now it’s been announced that Johnny Depp and his daughter Lily-Rose would also be in the film. For a film fan, and more importantly, a Kevin Smith Fan, this is great news.

Why? Because it’s Johnny F’in Depp. That’s why. You see, Johnny Depp has been in some of the best films ever made, and having him as part of this cast will only add to the greatness of this film. Having him agree to pair up with Smith is just one more thing to add to his awesome list. More over, having Depp’s daughter and Smith’s daughter star in the film will attract a new audience that may have overlooked Smith’s films in the past.

You’ll get a sneak peak at the Yoga Hosers stars in Tusk. They’ll be the two 15 year olds in the convenience store. Go figure, a convenience store. Also, it should be noted, that this will be Smith’s entry into comic book movies.

“People always ask me ‘Are you ever going to make a comicbook movie?’” said Smith. “This is it – but instead of yet another dude saving the day, our antiheroes are the most feared and formidable creatures man has ever encountered: two 15-year-old girls.”

I’ll look forward to doing a full review of the film once it is released.

You stay classy, interwebs.

'Tusk' - The Trailer is Released

I enjoy Kevin Smith and Kevin Smith movies. I follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and listen to his SModcast. I’ve seen everyone one of his movies and read his book Tough Sh*t, which was a great read.

If you’ve seen any of his movies, you know that the writing is where it’s at. He has an incredible skill for the written word. Whether it is Clerks, Clerks II, Dogma, Red State, or any of his other great films, you will see dark humor, seriousness, and incredible conversations between characters.

Tusk will be no different, and that is where my excitement lies. I remember listening to the podcast that turned in to Tusk. It was SModcast 259 The Walrus and theCarpenter. It was a conversation about an ad on Gumtree.com where the homeowner offered a place to stay free of charge, as long as the tenant dressed in a walrus costume. The ad was later shown to be a prank post, but non-the-less, Smith started writing the script and eventually turned it into a film based on a Twitter vote of #WalrusYes or #WalrusNo. This is a way only Smith could get a film made.

The trailer has now been released and that is awesome! I can’t wait for September 19 when I can see this movie, as this one actually has a theater release, unlike Red State. From the trailer, you can already tell that a great deal of time has been spent on the dialogue. From the quick jokes you hear to some of the deep content between Justin Long and Michael Parks, this will indeed be a great start to Smith’s horror trilogy and I can’t wait to see it.

I don't want to die in Canada,
