Sex Criminals - Suzie Down In The Quiet

Sex Criminals - Suzie Down In The Quiet

Having the word 'Sex' in a comic book title is almost always a marketing ploy, plain and simple. A way to draw attention to a book without actually having to give the end reader any real indication as to why that title was chosen. The same can be said for mainstream books as well. Not necessarily in regard to the book title, but in terms of cover art that doesn't mach the interior, or portraying a situation hinting of what's to come without actually delivering the goods.

Time and time again I fall into these traps and get burned. Luckily for me, this 'sex comedy for comics' actually paid off.

Eisner Award-winning Writer, Matt Fraction (Invincible Iron Man, The Immortal Iron Fist, Hawkeye) and Toronto Based comic Artist, Chip Zdarsky (Prison Funnies, Monster Cops) launched this creator owned indie series to acclaimed success in September 2013, and declared number 1 on Time Magazine's list of Top Ten Comics and Graphic Novels of 2013.

The premise of the book itself is simple, Suzie has the ability to manipulate time, creating a rift that she calls 'The Quiet'.

I know the ability to stop an manipulate time isn't a new concept in the comic world. Fan favorite characters including Kyle Rayner, Charles Xavier and Hiro Nakamura have all displayed a form of this ability at some point in the past. However, none quite like Suzie Dickson ...

An otherwise normal girl, Suzie has the ability to stop time when she has sex, or more specifically, orgasms.

Yes, you read that correctly.

In time she meets a guy, Jon, who has the same uncanny ability, and together naturally do what any other young, naive couple with time altering abilities would do: rob banks.

Fraction's exceptional combination of humor, sexuality and adoration to both the male and female perspective pairs incredibly well with Zdarsky's art, which is spot on for a book of this caliber covering both pencils and colors with great attention to detail. It should go without saying that this title is for Mature Readers Only. This time around, the title is no marketing ploy. This book delivers.

"Best Comic Of The Year." - TIME Magazine

"The Best Debut Of 2013" - Rolling Stone Magazine

What comes next? Cum World. Hint: Suzie's not a fan.
