The Weekly Pull Top 10 Best : Spider-Man Incarnations
Hot on the heels of this month’s opener to Marvel’s gigantic Spider-Verse event, which promises to feature “Every Spider-Man, Ever.,” I’ve compiled a list of my Top 10 Best Spider-Man Incarnations for this weeks installment of The Weekly Pull. Ranging from the obscure to the no doubt obvious, this is where I’ve found Spider-Man to be at his all-time best throughout the years and welcome your opinion!
10| Spider-Boy (Peter Ross) - In the mid-90s, Marvel and DC Comics teamed up to form a mix of characters (or Amalgams) that blended the most popular and prominent characters from each universe into one ultra hero or villain. In this particular instance, Spider-Man was combined with DCs Superboy to create Spider-Boy, who had the ability to redirect his own personal gravity, allowing him to climb walls and proportionately increase his strength.
09| Spider-Man 1602 - (Peter Parquagh) - In the pages of Marvel 1602, written by Neil Gaiman, we were introduced to a timeline where Marvel heroes existed within the Elizabethan era. Powerless in the series, the running gag would find Peter nearly being bitten by spiders leading to one of the most interesting and unique takes on the character.
07| Dark Avengers Spider-Man (Mac Gargan) - When former Venom host, Eddie Brock, found himself dying from cancer (eventually slitting his wrists in the pages of Marvel Knights: Spider-Man) he chose to auction off his symbiote. Finding it’s new host “unworthy,” the symbiote struck a deal with the former rouge, Scorpion (aka Mac Gargan), who became the new Spider-Man for Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers team.
06| Marvel Zombies Spider-Man (Peter Parker) - One of the most outrageous and popular takes on Spider-Man comes from the Marvel Zombies Universe. Assisting the Avengers with an altercation involving Ash Williams (yes, THAT Ash Williams) who had been brought to this version of the Marvel Universe by an infected version of the Sentry, Spider-Man himself becomes infected upon being bitten by Colonel America and plays a pivotal role in the Marvel Zombies mini-series.
05| Spider-Man: Noir (Peter Parker) - Taking place during the Great Depression, and raised on the belief of good triumphing over evil, Peter discovers his Uncle Ben has been murdered by a New York City businessman known as the Goblin for creating a strike on sweatshops. Upon receiving his powers from a spider bite, Peter creates his Spider-Man persona based on his late Uncle's WW1 airman uniform and sets out to take down the criminal underworld.
04| Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O’Hara) - In the not so distant future, geneticist Miguel O'Hara, who in an attempt to recreate the original Spider-Man's abilities for an employer, alters his own DNA in a lab related accident becoming the alter ego of the futuristic hero. To learn more, check out the Weekly Pull dedicated to the futuristic hero's return here!
03| The Superior Spider-Man (Otto Octavius) - Although a new addition to the Spider-Man universe, Otto Octavious' stint as the Superior Spider-Man brought a fresh new take on the character when the franchise feel into a lull following the Brand New Day story arc. Swapping his brain into Peter's body, Octavius set out to prove his superiority over Parker by proclaiming himself (and launching the single most ordered comic in the last decade) The Superior Spider-Man. 01| The Amazing Spider-Man (Peter Parker) - The Amazing Spider-Man himself, from the primary Marvel continuity, ranks as my number one pick. Without the version of Peter Parker who started it all, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the incredible stories and incarnations of the character listed above simply wouldn't exist. I for one will forever be a fan and can't wait to see where his adventures lead us next!
08| Spider-Girl (May Parker) - Stemming from the MC2 Universe and a spin-off of the What If? imprint, Spider-Girl is the teenage daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson who developed versions of her father’s spider abilities and stands as the longest-running superhero book with a lead female character ever published by Marvel.
02| Ultimate Spider-Man (Miles Morales) - The Ultimate line is the one place in the Marvel Universe where dead means dead. There is no more Wolverine, Daredevil, Doctor Strange or Black Widow and more importantly no Peter Parker who fell at the hands of the Green Goblin fighting to (successfully) save the lives of his Aunt May and Gwen Stacey. Unlike the other fallen heroes, a young man by the name of Miles Morales picked up the mantle becoming one of the most inspirational and controversial characters in the comic industry.
